Obituary

Willard Maxwell Chastain, 89 of Marietta died Sunday May 6, 2018. Funeral Services will be 2 PM Saturday May 12th at Elizabeth Baptist Church Marietta with Dr Steve Echols officiating. Private burial will follow at Georgia Memorial Park Cemetery.

Willard was the son of Jason and Eula Nebraska Chastain and was raised in Canton, Georgia. He attended Canton High School and Reinhardt College where he had a basketball scholarship. He married Helen Worley in 1950 and they had their first child Amy in 1952. He served in the US Army from 1955-1957; the army taught him that he was a natural accountant and led to the career that he pursued in his life.  After the army, Willard moved to Smyrna, Georgia and became a member of Elizabeth Baptist Church. He had a second child, Jane, in 1958. While working as a bookkeeper for Gordy Tire Company in Atlanta, Georgia Willard completed his business degree in accounting at Georgia State University in 1964. He later became the comptroller and CFO of that company and completed his accounting career at Toby Sexton Tire Company as CFO. Willard loved his work and did not retire from business until his mid-seventies.

Willard's Christian faith was central to his life and the core of his being; he loved Jesus Christ and gospel music and was not afraid to share his faith in God with everyone he met. He was active in his church and seldom missed a church service. Willard taught Sunday school, was a deacon of the church and volunteered his time to provide financial advice for church matters. Willard also volunteered through the church, visiting hospitals and nursing homes and worked in a church sponsored homeless shelter. He was not only generous with his personal time but also donated financially to many Christ-centered charities on a regular basis.

Willard was a loving husband and a father devoted to his family. He was also a loyal brother to his younger sisters, Eula Eaton and Peggy Sue Ragsdale. He was proud of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was actively engaged in their lives. He was present at their major life events including graduations, team sports, and marriages.

Willard is survived by his two daughters, Amy Pace and Jane Iber, his son-in-laws Randy Pace and Heinrich Iber, grandchildren Ben Pace (husband of Krista Hamrin) and Elizabeth Morgan (wife of Robert Morgan), great-grandchildren Laine and Campbell Morgan, and his caregiver of several years, Denise Abercrombie.
