Raymond Meredith Unser of Cartersville, GA passed away peacefully on Saturday morning, February 13, 2016. A service to celebrate his life will be held on February 22nd at 1:00pm at the Georgia National Cemetery near Canton, GA. The family will receive friends at the Collins Funeral Home in Acworth, Ga. prior to the service, beginning at 10:30am.

Ray was born in Norfolk, VA and graduated from Portlock High School in June of 1939. He went on to Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA to get his Mechanical Engineering degree and graduated in December of 1943. He worked for Westinghouse Electric as a graduate student but then enlisted in the Navy in March 1944. He served in the Navy on the USS Clarke Count/ LST- 601 during most of World War II in the Mediterranean unloading aviation gas and supplies for the US Air Force in Italy and also the British Air Force off the coast of Greece. They also helped in moving Fifth Army troops to Marseille, France.

After the war, Ray married Hazel Shackelford who he had dated while attending Virginia Tech. They wed on August of 1946 and Ray resumed his career with Westinghouse Electric in Pittsburgh. They moved to Hampton, SC in the early 1950's and became active in the community through their Clothes Closet Ministry with the First Baptist Church of Hampton. Ray was also a member of the Evergreen Lodge #153 in Hampton and enjoyed his time with friends in their community and attending their children's various sports activities. Ray and Hazel later moved to Acworth, GA in October of 2005 so they could be closer to their children and enjoy time with their family.

Ray is survived by his son, Robert F. "Bob" and Teresa Unser of Cartersville, his daughter Jody U. and Jerry Fisher of Roswell, GA and his sister Thelma and Ame' Amerson of Virginia Beach, VA. The family has requested that any memorials that may be made in Ray's honor be directed to the Clothes Closet at the First Baptist Church of Hampton, 305 Oak Street, Hampton, SC 29924.
