Pooran
Shahmirzadi
Mar 30, 1928 — Jan 10, 2023
Marietta
Pooran Shahmirzadi, who was better known as "Maman" or "Poori" to family, peacefully passed on January 10, 2023, in Marietta, Georgia. Maman was born in Tehran, Iran, on March 30, 1928, and raised in a large family. She is survived by three biological siblings: Nosrat Sehhat, Hossein Shahmirzadi, and Nassar Chahmirzadi.
Maman met the love of her life, Mahmoud Rashidi-Yazd, who predeceased her, and they raised a family of four kids in Tehran. Maman and Mahmoud were married for 63 years! Each child was able to come to the States to be educated and then eventually settled here. Being a family woman, she immigrated to the United States to be with her kids (and by then grandkids!), eventually becoming a naturalized citizen. We recall how assiduously she studied for the citizenship test and often recall her beaming smile the day she was sworn-in as a U.S. citizen.
Maman was a loving caretaker and an amazing cook. Her rice dishes (tah-chin and various koreshts) are the standard bearer. Maman was known to have a sweet tooth and was notoriously a lover of ice cream (bastanee) and bread.
We will affectionately remember Maman's "voi-voi" comments while smacking the back of her hand when we teased her, the way we told her to slow down (yavash bachae), her famous head nob in an upwards direction to answer "no," and "the Maman look" when you did something she caught. Maman loved to laugh, so her family would often tease her to prompt that laughter, and when happy she was quick to cry to illustrate joy. And because she always worried about her family traveling, we checked in with her upon our arrival, a trait that has been passed on to her kids on down – when you arrive, you let your family know!
Maman leaves behind four devoted children (Kamal, Saeed (spouse Manijeh), Hessam (Violet), and Farahnaz), five grandchildren (Kaveh, Aveh (Chris), Nima (Lauren), Yasi (Theo), and Reza (Jackie)), and seven great grandchildren (Faith, Lily, Violet, Ryan, Sara, Brady, and Harper).
Our Matriarch, Maman, holds a dear place in her kids, grandkids, and great grandkids hearts and touched anyone she met. She will be greatly missed.
Maman's services will be privately held at Marietta Funeral Home and Crematory, 915 Piedmont Road, Marietta, Georgia, followed by a burial at Mountain View Park Cemetery 410 Whitlock Ave NW, Marietta, GA 30064 on Friday, January 13, 2023 at 1:00PM. Flowers will be received at 3329 Chastain Ridge Drive, Marietta, Georgia.
