Mary Ellen was born June 28th, 1924 in Canastota, New York, to Charles and Cora Argersinger. She grew up on a dairy farm driving tractors and plowing fields alongside her father. Mary Ellen started her college years at the age of 16 at Potsdam SUNY, the Crane School of Music where she received a double major in Voice and Flute. Within a month of starting her college career, Mary Ellen received recognition by becoming the Dean's star pupil and mentee. Following graduation in 1945, she took a job with Camden, New York central school systems where she was assigned to teach music classes to nine different country schools. At that time, she had to travel to these schools down dirt country roads at times unpassable due to snowy conditions to teach 18-19 children in one room school houses. During her summer breaks from teaching, Mary Ellen would stay in Potsdam for her post-graduate work where she received her Master's degree in Music Education. On June 28th, 1947, Mary Ellen and Robert Mero were married at Saint Patrick's Catholic Church in Chittenago, New York which was the beginning of their whirlwind 70 year marriage. Between 1948 and 1950, Bob and Mary Ellen had their three children: Michael, Kaye, and Karen. By 1957, the Mero family had moved to Potsdam, New York, where Mary Ellen was a music teacher for the Potsdam Central school district. Mary Ellen retired in 1964 and continued to enjoy and practice music while raising their three children. Mary Ellen and Bob moved to Acworth, Georgia in 1978 where Mary Ellen sang with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus under the direction of Robert Shaw which included several European concert tours.
Mary Ellen was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, she was a gifted pianist, vocalist, and wonderful cook. Mary Ellen is survived by her devoted husband Robert Mero of Acworth; three children Michael Mero of Summerville, Kaye Mero of Acworth, and Karen Philips of Buffalo, New York; 12 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren.
