Lt. Col. James D. Hammond, Jr. USMC Ret., 92, of Woodstock, passed away August 8, 2016. Funeral Services will be Thursday, August 11, 2016 at 11am at First Baptist Church Woodstock (Worship Center) with Rev. Ken Smith and Rev. James "Jim" Waddle officiating. A Military Honor Service will be held at 2:30pm Thursday at Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, GA. Interment will be Friday at 2:00pm at The Marine Corps Quantico National Cemetery in Quantico, VA.

Lt. Col. Hammond was a native of Alexandria, VA. He was born November 29, 1923 to Mildred Lloyd and James Dulany Hammond, Sr. He graduated from George Washington High School in 1940 after which he attended Virginia Military Institute and the University of Virginia. He served in the US Marine Corps in World War II in Saipan, Tinian and Okinawa in the 2nd Marines. His Service to the Marine Corps in the Korean War was in the Chosin Reservoir with Dog Company, 2nd Bat. 7th Marine, 1st Division. Lt. Col Hammond retired from US Marines Corps in 1969.

Lt. Col. Hammond is survived by his wife, Patricia McMillan Hammond; sons, James "Jim" D. Hammond, III (Joy) of Palm Coast, FL and John N. "Jack" Hammond (Susan) of Charlottesville, VA; daughter, Kathryn Lloyd Hammond of Alexandria, VA; sister, Harriett Hammond of Alexandria, VA; step-son, John Michael Mason (Wendy) of Carrollton, GA; step-daughters, Susan Mason of Cartersville, GA and Karan (Kim) Mason of Canton, GA; 11 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 4-8pm at Marietta Funeral Home and Thursday from 10-11am at First Baptist Church Woodstock prior to the service. There will be a luncheon from 12-1:30pm Thursday following the service in the Magnolia Room at First Baptist Church Woodstock. Online condolences may be expressed at www.mariettafuneralhome.org
