Joseph Walter Jackson, Jr., 84, of Bay St. Louis, MS went to be with His Savior on Friday, April 13, 2018 in Gulfport, MS.
A long-term resident of Kennesaw, GA, Mr. Jackson ("Joe") was the Real Estate Broker of Choice Properties in Kennesaw for many years. A dedicated advocate for families with mentally handicapped children, he served as President of Cobb Association for Retarded Citizens, was instrumental in establishing two "Group Homes" in Georgia, as well as "The White Elephant," a thrift store that offered employment for mentally handicapped people. In 2001, he authored and published the book,
Who Will Love Me?
In this book, he recounts his personal experiences as father of a mentally handicapped child. His vision for this book was to encourage other families with handicapped children and to give others a glimpse into (and an understanding of) the lives of those families. He was an active Christian and former member of Summit Baptist Church in Acworth.
Mr. Jackson was a loving and compassionate caregiver for his first wife, Joyce, as she suffered through Alzheimer's disease in her latter years as well as for his mentally handicapped daughter. Several years after his "special" daughter and his wife went home to be with the Lord, he was married to Maureen "Polly" Herrmann for the last 12 years of his life.
Mr. Jackson was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph W. & Arlene (Jacobs) Jackson, Sr.; First wife of 49 years, Joyce Robbins Jackson; his special daughter, Rhonda Ann Jackson; and step-son, Lawrence Randall Braden.
Survived by his wife Maureen "Polly" (Smith) Herrmann-Jackson of Bay St. Louis, MS; daughter and son-in-law Linda Baker and her husband Paul of Greenville, SC; 2 grandsons, Matthew Baker (Emily) of Arlington, VA; Joseph Baker (Anna) of Eden, UT; two great-grandsons, Timothy "Timmy" Baker & Noah Baker; sister, Florene Carter of Rome, GA; Mr. Jackson is also survived by two step-sons, Richard Braden of Chalmette, LA; David Braden (Melody) of Pensacola, FL; and step-daughter, Cynthia Braden of Bay St. Louis, MS;
Visitation will be Saturday, April 21, 2018, at Collins Funeral Home in Acworth, GA at 1:00 pm followed by a service at 2:00 pm and interment at Cheatham Hill Memorial Park Cemetery immediately after the service.
