John Alexander Shook, age 93, died Saturday, September 21, 2019 in Cartersville, Georgia​ after living a long life of service to his family and his country, ​while remaining centered in his faith and​ belief​ that Jesus Christ is our Lord and Savior.

John was born in Heaton, North Carolina on July 28, 1926 to Joseph Y. and Anne Elizabeth (Smith) Shook and worked on the family farm throughout his high school years. Immediately following high school graduation, John, along with his twin brother, Paul, immediately joined the U.S. Army and served for two years, including deployment to southern Germany at the very end of World War II. Upon discharge, he returned home and tended to the family farm while earning an Associate's Degree at Lees-McCrae College. Together John and Paul then traveled to South Carolina and eventually Detroit, Michigan seeking construction work and employment in the automobile industry in the early 1950's.

John met his wife Carole in Detroit where they were married on November 26, 1955 and remained there where John worked as a framing and finish carpenter for a residential contractor, and later as a Customer Service Representative for a large home builder. He completed his working career as a carpenter for Cadillac Motors HQ and Research Facility.

John and Carole moved to Lebanon, Tennessee and then to the Acworth Georgia area where they have lived the last 36 years. During his retirement years John enjoyed working in his wood shop on various projects including assembling powder musket rifles. He also enjoyed participating in Civil War battle reenactments.

John is survived by a wife, Bobbie Carole, and two children, Mike (wife-Patricia) and Elizabeth (husband-Jerry).  He also leaves to cherish his memory four grandchildren (Adam and Ashley Schindler, Jennifer and John Shook) and one great-grandchild (Madison Schindler).

John was a gentle man of integrity and always carried kindness in his pocket.  Although considered by many as reserved, John could recount a story from the past, often a humorous one, and have an entire group laughing as his unique storytelling style unveiled itself…you almost weren't sure if it was a joke until he got to the punchline.  John was loveable and easy to be around.  He was an exceptional role model for all that knew him and will certainly be missed.

A Funeral Service will be held this Thursday at 11AM at Collins Funeral Home located at 4947 N Main St, Acworth, GA 30101. Immediately following the funeral service everyone is encouraged join the family at a committal service at 1:00 PM including military honors at the Georgia National Cemetery located at 1080 Scott Hudgens Dr, Canton, GA 30114 where John will be interred.
