Jane (Bunkley) Williams Sherlock

Jane, a loving Christian spirit, joined her Heavenly Father on September 28, 2024, after several years of being affected by chronic dementia.  She was a resident at Dogwood Forest of Acworth since 2018.

Born April 18, 1932, to the late Walter Jack Bunkley and Betty Cooper Bunkley Johnson, she was also predeceased by her husband, Donald Anglin Williams. She was recently predeceased by her one son, Calvin Williams (wife Molly) who resided in Marietta, GA. In addition, her brother, Jack Bunkley predeceased her.  His wife, Martha, nephew Brit, nieces Jane and Juliet, were all close to Jane and mourn her passing.  Also surviving Jane are nephews Ken (Peggy) Williams of Marietta, GA, and Britt (Sammie) Willliams of Decatur, as well as several great nieces and then great-great nieces and nephews.

Jane was born in Brunswick, GA, moved around the south, then the family moved to Atlanta, where she graduated from Henry Grady High School.  She met Don Williams at Grady, and both were members of Morningside Baptist Church.  The fell in love and were married in 1953. After having Calvin, the couple were charter members of Wildwood Baptist Church in Kennesaw. The little family traveled extensively in the USA and Canada.

Jane's early career included working as a sales clerk at a dress shop, then Rich's Department Store, and at Southern Bell.  When her son was 4 years, she was employed at Cobb Exchange Bank, worked nearly every type of job there, and became head teller at the Acworth, GA branch in 1974. She retired after 39 years there (and 6 name changes for the bank).   Jane's concern was to take a personal touch with customers and employees, look to the future and didn't believe on dwelling on the past.  She was very popular with people with her kindness and smiling, lovely spirit showing daily.  In an article in the AJC, dated in 1978, "She Just Adds Some Sunshine," indicating that she was a cheerful person. She served 2 years as president of the Big Shanty Garden Club.  She also served as president of the Acworth Business Profession Woman's Club.

Jane's job on earth was to spread joy.  She showed her love of God through her several church affiliations. She attended Avondale Baptist Church, Bellevue Baptist Church, Morningside Baptist, Kennesaw First Baptist, Wildwood Baptist, Pilgrim United Church of Christ (charter member), then Acworth Presbyterian Church as an elder, treasurer and Sunday School teacher.  She was true believer and witness in showing God's love to all people with her kindness and acceptance of everyone.  Always looking for the positive, she was a dedicated nature lover.  Jane believed that as long as she could pay her bills and tithe, she was rich.

Jane was involved in several clubs.  She was president of Cobb County Democratic Women; Marietta Garden Club; Cobb County Master Gardener; and Golden K. Kiwanis Club.  Her community service included the Acworth Food Pantry, a volunteer mentor for students at Pine Mountain, Oak Grove and Durham schools. Also included were Meals on Wheels, March of Dimes, Cobb 4-H Club and the North Georgia State Fair.  She was was an election poll worker and manager, and also a volunteer at Habitat for Humanity.  Jane was an inspiration to all she came in contact with.  Her sense of humor and smile made it easy for folks to like her and see God in action through her works.

Jane had always wanted a big family and was blessed with that when she married John T. Sherlock in 1992.  She inherited four step-daughters –Kathy (Dr. Tom) Scott of Marietta, Mary (Neal) Martin, and twins Patricia "cat" (Chuck Lotts) Sherlock, and Eileen Sherlock of Tallahasee, FL, as well as two grandsons, John and Christopher Self.  Jane and husband John traveled and enjoyed life together until his passing in 2003.  Jane loved the frequent and joyous family get-togethers and cooking for several people.  After John's death, Jane went to work part time at the Cobb County Finance Department.

Jane was always involved and busy.  She believed in not sitting around, but to keep moving.  In her final days she could be seen walking around Dogwood Forest regularly.  Although she has a sweet spirit, she was no push-over.  Her philosophy was that one could disagree with others, but still be friends with no hard feelings.

Funeral services will be 1:00pm Thursday, October 10, 2024 in the Acworth Presbyterian Church, 4561 Church St, Acworth, GA 30101.  Burial will follow in the Shiloh United Methodist Cemetery, Kennesaw, GA.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the Church.
