James Raley Kemp, 79, of Dallas, GA, entered his heavenly home on Sunday, November 5, 2017, following a brief, but courageous battle with lung cancer. Funeral services will be held at 3PM on Tuesday, November 7 in the chapel of Collins Funeral Home with Rev. D. Keith Bates and Rev. Ronnie Dilbeck officiating. Interment will follow at Hickory Grove Baptist Church in Acworth.
Mr. Kemp was born December 9, 1937 in Acworth on Hickory Grove Road, at the home of his grandparents. He lived in Acworth for most of his life. For 26 years he was employed as a foreman in the seaming department of Unique Knitting Mills. When Unique closed, he went to work for the Cobb County School system, where he worked for another 21 years, retiring as a maintenance supervisor. He moved to Blue Ridge in 1995 before settling in Dallas in 2014.
James never met a stranger. He loved people and was an excellent cook. His smoked barbecue and other creations were generously shared with his family, neighbors and friends. While living in Blue Ridge, he frequently held gospel signings and invited friends and family to enjoy the feast. In Blue Ridge, folks would often greet him as "The Barbecue Man". It was there that he began keeping a record of the rain and snowfall, a practice he continued for 19 years.
He was a member of Friendship Baptist Church in Blue Ridge. After moving to Dallas, he worshiped at Lost Mountain Church of God in Powder Springs. His church families always looked forward to the tasty treats in his big cast iron pots and crock pots.
Mr. Kemp is preceded in death by his parents, Howard & Nettie Lou Kemp and brother Donald Kemp. He is survived by his daughter, Jane (Hugh) Turnipseed; grandchildren, Brad, Stacie, and Cale Turnipseed; great grandchildren, Bradley, Maddalynn, connor, and Emmalynn; Jame's mother, Carolyn Kemp; his beloved schnauzer "girls", ChaCha, BeBe, and Cocoa; as well as several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Monday, November 6 from 6-8PM at Collins Funeral Home, 4947 N. Main St., Acworth, GA 30101, 770-974-3133
