Huey Thaxton Murphy, Jr., of Cartersville, Georgia, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, following a recent illness, leaving behind a legacy of devotion to family, community, and lifelong curiosity. He was born on December 18, 1947, in Moultrie, Georgia, to the late Naomi and Huey Thaxton Murphy, Sr.
Huey was a proud graduate of the Baylor School, Class of 1966, and also attended Avondale High School. He went on to earn degrees from the  University of Georgia (mathematics) and Southern Polytechnic University (architectural engineering), building a career grounded in both precision and creativity.
A dedicated member of his community, Huey gave generously of his time and talents. He previously served on the Chestnut Springs HOA board and the Shaw Park Athletic Association board. He was actively involved in the Atlanta chapter of the American Institute of Architects and during his college years, he was a member of the SAE fraternity, forming friendships that endured throughout his life.
Huey found great joy in the outdoors. Whether fishing, playing golf, watching the birds in his backyard, or enjoying the companionship of a beloved dog (Bailey and Brogan), he appreciated the quiet beauty of nature. He and his beloved wife, Anne, shared a passion for travel, especially trips to the beach and to Kentucky, where they enjoyed visiting horse farms and exploring the bourbon trail. A lifelong student of history, Huey was an active participant in a local Civil War relic club, always eager to learn and share stories of the past.
Faith was an important part of Huey's life. He was a devoted member of Sam Jones Methodist Church, where he found community, purpose, and fellowship.
Huey was preceded in death by his parents and his cherished wife, Anne Harden Murphy. He is survived by his loving children: daughters Alison (Kevin) Smock and Leigh (Rob) Welch, and son Michael Murphy. He was a proud grandfather to Hayden and Hadley Welch and Harrison Smock. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Marie (Carl) Westmoreland and Marian (Bill) Denmark, along with their families, as well as many cousins, extended family members, and dear friends.
Huey will be remembered for his steady presence, his love of learning, and his deep commitment to those he cared about. His memory will live on in the lives he touched and the family he so dearly loved.
A memorial gathering is set for Monday, May 4th from 10:00 to 11:30 am in the Sam Jones Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, 100 West Church Street, Cartersville, Georgia, 30120.
A private family burial at Christ Church, St. Simons Island, Georgia, is planned for a future date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Huey's memory to Sam Jones Methodist Church.
