Henry W. "Red" Schoening, Jr. , 90, died March 28, 2016 at his home in Marietta.  Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 2 at 11:00AM in the chapel of Marietta Funeral Home with Rev. Jerry Tyler officiating.  Burial will follow at 2:00PM at Resthaven Memorial Gardens in Decatur.

He was born July 29, 1925 in Louisville, KY to the late Henry W. Schoening Sr. and Irene Stengel Schoening. After graduating from Male High School, he was drafted into the Coast Guard where he served 2 ½ years on board a communications/rescue ship in the South Pacific theatre.

In June 1946, after turning down several pro baseball offers he entered Georgia Tech on an athletic scholarship for football, basketball, and baseball. He married Frances Fechter in 1949 in Atlanta, and joined Atlantic Steel Company after graduating from Georgia Tech in June 1950. His career spanned more than 40 years prior to retiring as Plant Manager in Cartersville.

He is survived by his daughter Vicki (Ron) Neal, son Randy (Brenda), six grandchildren, Sean (Natalie) Neal, Ryan (Amanda) Neal, Craig Neal, Kacee Schoening (Dan) Zimmerman, Redd and Parker Schoening, seven great grandchildren Kailyn, Kendyl, Reese, Brooklyn, Caleb, and Kathryn Neal, and McKinley Zimmerman. He is also survived by his brother Kenneth. He is preceded in death by his wife Frances and daughter Cathy.
