Obituary

Berry B. "Barty" Rikard Sr. , 84, of Panama City Beach, FL and formerly of Marietta, GA died Monday, August 1, 2016.  Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 4 at 11am in the chapel of Marietta Funeral Home with Rev. Glenn Hannigan officiating.  A second funeral service will be held on Friday, August 5 at 1pm at Bachman Chapel Lutheran Church in Prosperity, SC.  Burial will follow in the Bachman Chapel Lutheran Church Cemetery.

Mr. Rikard was born on June 15, 1932 in Atlanta, GA to Julian B. and F. Inez Rikard and was brother to J. Winford Rikard.  He attended O'Keefe High School in Atlanta where he starred in football and track.  He obtained his GED after leaving high school early to join the Navy.  While in the Navy, he served in the Korean War as a Machinist Mate aboard the USS Washburn supporting numerous operations including the landing at Inchon.

He married Gwendolyn Joyce Rhodes and they had four boys together.  He lost his wife to Emphysema after 39 years of blissful marriage.  He worked as a police officer with the Atlanta Police Department and retired after 20 years of service at the rank of Lieutenant.

Mr. Rikard remarried Corine Earwood Gilchrist of Marietta, GA.  They relocated shortly after marrying to Panama City Beach, FL where they enjoyed good weather and good friends.

He was a Master Mason and member of Kennesaw Lodge #33, F&AM, of Marietta, GA; 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason, Valley of Atlanta; and a member of the Shaddai Shrine Temple of Panama City Beach, FL. He was a Scoutmaster with the Boy Scouts of America and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #2681, the American Legion, the Fraternal Order of Police, and the Moose Lodge.

He was an active member of the Gulfview United Methodist Church in Panama City, FL and former member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church in Roswell, GA as well as 10th street Methodist Church in Atlanta, GA.

He is preceded in death by his first wife, Joyce Rhodes Rikard and his step-daugter, Debra A. Gilchrist.  He is survived by his wife, Corine Earwood Gilchrist Rikard, of Panama City Beach, FL; sons, Berry B. Rikard, Jr. , of Panama City Beach, FL, Randy L. Rikard (Michelle), of Emerson, GA, Timmy B. Rikard (Sherri), of Marietta, GA, Roddy C. Rikard, of Patrick, SC; step-sons, James E. Gilchrist (Kim), of Wellington, FL and Charles E. Gilchrist (Kim), of Marietta, GA; 10 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren.
